"So unhealthy?! How can you give your child McDonald's?"
"You don't care about his health?" Am I really such a sinner and bad parent for giving my son his favourite happy meal?
With all the constant bombardment of comments from the media, government, social media and even family members, parents are constantly fearing if the food they feed their children will result in serious consequences such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Debra and I believe in living life to the fullest. We believe that our children should eat happy and enjoy the flavours of life. Although we do not believe in any special diets, we do restrict our children's intake of sweets treats. How about McDonald's Happy Meal then?
The only way to find out was to compare the nutritional information for an objective comparison. We are comparing Chicken Rice (260g / 60% adult plate), Fried Rice (260g / 60% adult plate) and a complete Happy Meal with drink.
From this comparison, we can tell that Fried rice is actually quite unhealthy with its extremely high cholesterol and high sodium. Chicken Rice ranks highest in sodium. If we chose to give our children fries, then the meal will rank high in fat and calories. Bear in mind a child with a moderately active lifestyle can take in about 1200 calories.
Surprise surprise, if your child eats corn with nuggets and ribena, it is actually the healthiest option! PHEW! But....we do have to acknowledge that all the dishes mentioned do not contain sufficient greens.
Conclusion: Eat everything in moderation, have a balanced diet and when in doubt, a simple research will give you a peace of mind :)
