We have always loved adventures. Other than our two honeymoons to UK and NZ, most of our trips happen like this:
"You mean you have not been to Genting before?!" We were in the car the next morning, I drove 4.5 hours and arrived in Genting for lunch. Debra was 8 months pregnant but it didn't stop us! (She slept most of the way anyway...haha!)
Matthias was 3 months old... and I told Debra, "let's drive to Phuket tonight" I drove from Singapore to Phuket, Thailand in 17 straight hours with Matthias' bed and steriliser in the boot.
"Eh just book lah...we pack now later go airport..." Booked a flight 4 hours before heading to Hong Kong Disneyland the same day with a 6 month old in a carrier.
Somehow since Gwyn came along, we became a lot more scared and prepared a lot more even for our short trips across the causeway. We even felt like we didn't want to go anymore because we were so worried!
Thank God we got over our jitters and here are some little hacks we found useful on this trip!
You don't need to bring a steriliser for your baby's bottles!
Just book a hotel room with a microwave! (or check if you can request for one)
Get these Microwave steam steriliser bags. They are extremely easy to use, just wash the bottles, pop one or two into the bag, pour the recommended amount of water inside and start the microwave! (Instructions on how long and how much power are printed on the bags)
You CAN bring your baby stroller on board! You don't have to be tired lugging your kid around the airport. Get a baby stroller that can be folded into cabin size! We bought this stroller to replace our big Quinny pram that we attached the infant car seat to since Gwyn is now older. We bought a Beblum Navi Stroller that was only $2xx. Gwyn got to take her afternoon nap fully reclined while we waited to board the plane. We only folded it when it was time to board. No problems getting it to fit the overhead compartments in the plane!
IMPORTANT NOTE: You need to put the stroller into a bag to cover it. Most airlines do accept this arrangement, do read their terms and conditions!
You can get your toddler/3yr old to behave and not annoy other passengers even while flying budget airlines with no inflight entertainment! We loaded up our laptop (fully charged) with his favourite cartoons so he could watch them in flight. Additionally, we brought Matthias to Toys R us to buy a new toy he really liked for the trip the week before. We KEPT the toy in our cupboard and only gave it to him on the day itself! This made sure he was excited about the new toy and played with it quite a bit for the trip! We got him his favourite football magazine at the airport too. He was well entertained!
When you are travelling with kids, PLAN LESS ACTIVITIES on the itinerary. This really keeps both parents and children sane. We planned ONE attraction or ONE major event a day.
Be FLEXIBLE and be ready for changes and cancellation for your plans. If you feel tired, take a nap together or laze at the pool! If the family totally enjoys the activity/attraction, stay longer! It is a holiday after all.
WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES! We all wore covered and comfortable shoes, including Gwyneth who wore Hiro & Jack's very own Handmade Toddler shoes!
